Perched atop a jagged offshore rock, Tanah Lot (meaning "Land in the Sea") is a 16th-century masterpiece of Balinese spirituality and coastal architecture. Founded by the high priest Danghyang Nirartha, legend says he spent the night on this rocky island and later commanded the local villagers to build a temple here to honor the Sea God, Baruna.

The magic of Tanah Lot lies in its isolation. At high tide, the temple is completely surrounded by the ocean, appearing to float on the waves. At low tide, a rocky path emerges, allowing you to walk across to the foot of the temple. While the inner sanctum is reserved for worshippers, you can receive a blessing with holy water from the fresh spring that flows from the base of the rock—a natural miracle surrounded by salt water.
