Standing over 1,000 meters up the side of the Great Volcano, Pura Besakih is the ultimate destination for any cultural traveler. It is not just one temple, but a sprawling sanctuary that has survived volcanic eruptions and centuries of history. As you climb the grand staircases, you’ll see the iconic meru towers (multi-tiered thatched roofs) reaching toward the clouds, often framed by the smoke of Mount Agung in the distance.
This is a living temple where thousands of Balinese pilgrims gather daily. Because of its size and spiritual importance, the experience is highly regulated to ensure respect. You will walk through the "Great Dragon" staircases and explore the main courtyard, Pura Penataran Agung, which represents the center of the universe in Balinese cosmology.
