Tucked away in a lush river valley near Tampaksiring, the Pakerisan Watershed preserves some of Bali's oldest archaeological sites. The centerpiece is Gunung Kawi, an 11th-century funerary complex boasting ten 7-meter-tall shrines carved straight into the rock cliffs. The surrounding river system supplies water to the nearby rice paddies and water temples like Tirta Empul, making it an essential ecological and spiritual artery of ancient Bali.
